Ahh, the selfie. Photos of one’s self shared with the world on social media. Love ’em or hate ’em, selfies are very much a part of our social media lives. It’s no surprise that #selfies are a popular activity at the world’s largest sporting event, the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
It’s really not a surprise. Search any social network for the hashtag #selfie and you’ll be browsing through faces from around the world. But, how did it all start?

Leave it to NBC Sports & Olympic Social Media guy, Dan Palla, to suggest the #SochiSelfie hashtag.
Back in October!!
Dan knew what was to come. Great call by him.

Olympic athletes love taking selfies. Share your #SochiSelfie with us throughout the #Sochi2014 Winter Olympic Games and we may feature them on our account over the duration of the games. You may even see a few of them on our broadcast which starts Februray 6th 8pm ET. Don't forget to tag us with our username and the hashtag #SochiSelfie. #TeamUSA #NBCOlympics #Olympics #Sochi #WinterGames #Selfie
This one doesn’t have the hashtag, but I thought it was a great example of how selfies are so much a part of the Olympic experience. They bring you into the athletes’ lives during the games.
