#NHLDraft Social Media Guide

Will you or won’t you?

Come on, you can tell me. I won’t tell anyone. I promise.

Will you or won’t you…

watch the NHL Draft?

***

After the craziness on Thursday of the NBA Draft, I am just about “drafted” out. Nevertheless, another pro draft is upon us and it’s time for another Social Media Guide.

The NHL Draft is Sunday. All…seven…rounds of it. That’s right. Seven rounds in one day. If you’re a passionate NHL fan, will you watch? Probably. Just like there are NFL fans who watched every single draft pick over three days, I’m sure there are NHL fans who will watch the equivalent on Sunday.

If that’s you, or if you’re just going to be a casual fan, then this post is for you. Below, are the social media account links for every NHL team. All links were obtained from team websites, except for the Buffalo Sabres who didn’t provide easy-to-find social media links on their site.

A few quick notes I wanted to mention first:

  • When I go to a website, I like to look for the social media links. Some teams, not just in the NHL, make you work for it. Meaning, you have to dig to find their social media information. But, then there’s the Toronto Maple Leafs, whose splash page has all of the social media icons front and center. No having to go to the main page. No clicking on tabs to find the networks. They’re all right there, greeting me warmly. (Not really, but I love this quick access. I shouldn’t have to search for links. I wish all teams/schools did this.)

  • Researching these social media guides, I sometimes get so busy just trying to find the links that I don’t always pay attention to interesting tidbits. Today, I was looking over the Detroit Red Wings social media networks and noticed something unique on their Twitter header. Their Twitter page is “presented by @AmwayUS”. I can’t say that I’ve seen a bio like that before. Those who know sports business better than me hopefully can verify that this is indeed a “sponsor” of a Twitter page or not. Is this unique? Or am I just now noticing it? If you know, please fill me in on this because I find it very interesting. Great idea in sports business, that’s for sure. Imagine the possibilities.

  • I was surprised at how many teams had FourSquare links. I haven’t done a full-on comparison between leagues but it seems like the NHL has the highest amount of teams (arenas) on FourSquare.
  • Interesting to also note the number of teams on Google+ and Pinterest. The Chicago Blackhawks have a large following on Google+. That could be because of the cup. I’d love to know what their numbers were before the playoffs started.
  • Two teams provided a LinkedIn link on their website: the Los Angeles Kings and the Philadelphia Flyers, although the Flyers’ is a locked account (you have to request to join the group).
  • One last thing that I loved from a team. The Anaheim Ducks have a Social Media Central page. While other teams have similar pages, or hubs, the Ducks have taken it a step further. Their page includes “Social Media How-Tos”. Ducks Social Media Central

As popular as social media is, there are plenty of sports fans who don’t use these networks on an every day basis. The Ducks’ guide includes what each network does and exactly how they use them.  Brilliant idea! Teams, schools, athletes shouldn’t assume that “all” of their fans know how to “do” social media. This shows they’re cognizant of their, perhaps, non-tech-savvy fans.

  • Who will be the first pick? It could be Seth Jones. The Colorado Avalanche have the first pick in the draft but no one is sure if Jones will be their pick. All indications are, however, that there are plenty of high-quality players to select from for teams near the top of round 1.

The guide is arranged alphabetically and includes the first pick in the draft each team will have (as of Saturday night). You can find the complete draft order for all seven rounds on NHL.com’s “Draft Stats” page.
