Visionary. Wise.

Those are two of the words that I’ve read today that best describe Dave Gavitt. The Hall of Fame former coach and the Big East conference’s first commissioner passed away late Friday night. It wasn’t completely unexpected as he had been battling illness for a while now. But, receiving news of someone’s death, as anyone knows, is never easy to hear.

Meanwhile, rumors abounded on Twitter today that Syracuse and Pittsburgh have applied for application to join the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), leaving the Big East conference.  Syracuse was a founding member of the Big East while Pittsburgh has been with the conference since 1982. Some speculation is Big East could wind up getting lost in the shuffle (aka ‘conference realignment’).

Ironic isn’t it? The Big East’s main advocate for years passes away at a time when the conference faces a “potential” monumental challenge to their livelihood. Mr. Gavitt would have been well-skilled to handle this latest storm.

May God comfort his family and friends in their time of sorrow.

As is the case in posts like these, presented without comment the Twitterverse reaction:
