Rory comes. Rory goes. And Rory won his major. By a mile. Okay, maybe not a mile but he won pretty convincingly.
“Wait a minute”, you say. “How can you be writing about golf….you hate golf?”.
Ahh, tis true. I hate golf but this isn’t a normal golf post. No, it’s a Twitter kind of post.
When I last wrote about Rory and golf, it was after his Masters collapse. What a sad picture he painted as he continually ‘choked’ away his lead back then.
Contrast that with this past weekend where he was calm, cool and collected as can be. (Confession: yes, I watched very briefly on Sunday. Just enough to see a couple of shots of him and to see him hug his father on Father’s Day. I cried.) Even amidst my tears, what do you think I was thinking about?
Twitter. I just had to know how much the U.S. Open affected Rory’s follower count.
When last checked in April, he was at 228,886 followers. Yesterday, he was at 410,955. Today? Only 430,799. A nice little jump I’d say in two months. However……
There is the matter of a certain unnamed golfer who happens to be, for some reason I still can’t fathom, the most popular golfer with fans. And he could very well be the most popular athlete in the world; depends on what research firm you believe. Back in April, we left him with 754,611. Tonight? 1,015,520. Yup. As much as I hate to admit it, he is the “fan favorite” when it comes to golf and golfers on Twitter.
Those two weren’t the only ones I checked on back then.
Geoff Ogilvy – @geoffogilvy = 38,438 in April / 45,097 tonight
Rickie Fowler – @RickieFowlerPGA = 105,205 in April / 143,548 tonight
Y.E. Yang – @Y_E_Yang = 18,528 in April / 23,447 tonight
Y.E. Yang was in “contention” for a while this past weekend…..that is, in contention for second place. And although he faltered toward the end, he did have this to say on Twitter:
Great sentiment from Y.E. Yang.
But back to our champion. He tweeted a picture of himself taking a drink from his U.S. Open trophy. However, someone tweeted that Rory had taken a recent trip to Haiti. Yes, in the middle of the golf season; which I think is fantastic. He tweeted a pic from his trip: (kid’s got it….perspective):
I like him. Let’s keep him sports fans. Let’s keep him. (Code word for “Let’s cheer for him.”)
TWEET OF THE DAY
Ideally, I only wanted this post to be about Rory. Every once in a while, however, you come across a tweet that is just brilliant. It paints a picture in 140 characters or less that…well……it’s just….oh, just read it already:
